Braemount Care Home Marks Dementia Week with Meaningful Activities that Celebrate Connection and Wellbeing

Residents at Braemount Care Home enjoyed a week of thoughtful, engaging and person-centred activities as the home marked Dementia Week, celebrating the importance of connection, inclusion and meaningful experiences for people living with dementia.
Throughout the week, the team delivered a variety of activities carefully designed to support residents’ emotional, physical and social wellbeing, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to take part in a way that reflected their individual interests and needs.
One of the week’s most personal moments saw Wellbeing Coordinator Caitlyn spend dedicated one-to-one time with resident Margaret Stewart, who is cared for in bed and enjoys discussing true crime stories. Although Margaret does not live with dementia, the visit ensured she remained fully included in the week’s celebrations through meaningful conversation and companionship, helping to reduce isolation while supporting her wellbeing and sense of identity.
Residents also embraced the benefits of spending time outdoors. Dougie Moir enjoyed a gentle walk around the home’s garden with Caitlyn, taking in the sights and sounds of nature in a calm, familiar setting. Access to outdoor spaces provides valuable sensory stimulation, encourages independence and helps promote relaxation and positive mental wellbeing.
A highlight of the week was a heartwarming intergenerational visit from St Peter’s Nursery, where 25 children, nursery staff and family members joined residents for story time and a lively singing session. Residents Anne Madigan, Maria Donnachie, Millie Mullen, Karol Redford, Agnes Browning and Cathy Arbuckle shared smiles, songs and conversation with the children, creating joyful moments that encouraged communication, stimulated memories and strengthened community connections across the generations.
The home’s Men’s Club also enjoyed a science-themed sensory activity, with residents Dougie Moir, Barry Reid, Hugh Flynn and Andrew Noble exploring hands-on experiences that sparked curiosity and conversation. Designed to be accessible for people at different stages of dementia, the session encouraged participation without pressure, allowing residents to enjoy meaningful engagement through sensory exploration.
The week concluded with a live church service followed by group singing, attended by residents Margaret Perrie, Liz Kerr and Lauretta McCrory. Familiar hymns, prayers and shared worship provided comfort and reassurance while helping residents reconnect with treasured memories, personal identity and lifelong faith.
Dementia Week at Braemount highlighted the home’s commitment to providing compassionate, person-centred care that goes beyond meeting physical needs. Through meaningful activities, social connection and individual support, the team continues to create opportunities for residents to feel valued, included and empowered every day.
