Bringing Wimbledon to Ryland View Care Home

22 July 2024

Yesterday, the spirit of Wimbledon graced Ryland View as Simon, a family member of one of the residents, generously spent an hour engaging the residents in fun tennis games and catch-the-ball activities. This initiative aimed to keep the residents’ mobility intact while infusing a bit of joy into their afternoon.

The outdoor session was a hit among the residents, who relished the opportunity to participate in physical activities and enjoy the sunny weather. Such activities are crucial in care homes as they promote physical health, enhance mobility, and provide therapeutic benefits, helping to improve overall well-being.

In a touching gesture, Simon ensured that even bed-bound residents could join in on the fun. He brought the tennis games into their bedrooms, playing catch with them to ensure they felt included and enjoyed the benefits of the activity.

Residents expressed their delight, with Mick reminiscing, “I have really enjoyed this; it takes me back to when I used to play tennis up Victoria Park.” Simon, the volunteer tennis player, remarked, “This has been great; some of your residents have a good swing on them. It’s good to keep their mobility up!” Emily, another family member, shared, “I’m so glad we could do this today, something different for the residents.”

Sarah, the Activities Coordinator, highlighted the positive impact of the event: “It’s nice for our residents to be out in the sunshine, and it’s bringing back some memories, which brings a sense of remembrance we can later discuss with them. Such a fun afternoon!”

A heartfelt thank you goes to Simon and Emily for dedicating their time not only to spend with their father but also to bring something fun and therapeutic to Ryland View. Their efforts are deeply appreciated and serve as a wonderful example of the positive impact of physical activities in care homes.
