Burns Day Celebrations in Full Swing at Rutherglen Care Home
1 February 2025
Rutherglen Care Home was alive with Scottish spirit as residents celebrated Burns Day with a host of traditional activities and entertainment. The home was decorated with handmade tartan bunting created by the residents, adding a splash of Scottish colour to the festivities.
Residents spent the day immersed in Scottish culture, enjoying the recitation of classic Burns poems and listening to traditional Scottish music. A highlight of the day was the Burns supper, where everyone tucked into a hearty meal of haggis, neeps, and tatties – a true taste of Scotland.
The celebrations continued on Friday, 26th January with a lively performance from Shoogalie Road Productions, who brought their show ‘Bonnie Wee Jeanie McColl’ to the home. The performance had everyone singing along to beloved Scottish classics, including Auld Lang Syne, I Belong to Glasgow, and Bonnie Wee Jeanie McColl.
Janette Muirhead, 74, reflected on the performance, saying:
“That was all the old songs we used to sing for our party pieces – reminded me of my mum and dad.”
Drew Thomson, 92, also shared his delight:
“Brilliant songs and she’s got a lovely voice! Loved the mention of the Denniston Palais – many a good night I had in there.”
Rachel MacNeil, Activity Coordinator at Rutherglen Care Home, praised the performance:
“Shoogalie Road always put on a great show and we love having them here! It’s so nice to see everyone having a great time and to listen to the stories and memories that the shows always evoke.”
The Burns Day celebrations were a wonderful opportunity for residents to come together, share memories, and honour Scotland’s rich cultural heritage – all while enjoying some good food, music, and laughter.
