Celebrating St. George’s Day at Hammerwich Hall
6 May 2025
On 23 April 2025, residents and colleagues at Hammerwich Hall Care Home celebrated the victory of St George over the dragon.
The story goes that the dragon demanded tribute from villagers, which was made up of livestock and trinkets. When they ran out of those, they started giving up a human tribute once a day.
One day, the princess herself was chosen as tribute, and when she was walking towards the dragon’s cave, St. George saw her and asked her why she was crying. The princess told the saint about the dragon and asked him to leave in case he too might be killed.
However, our brave saint refused to flee, took up his sword and slew the dragon, rescuing the princess and becoming a legend in the process.
At Hammerwich, Our Wellbeing Coordinator, Paulina, took on that brave spirit and decked the halls with English ‘red cross’ flags, sharing the history of St George with our residents followed by a traditional afternoon tea party consisting of savoury foods prepared by our Chef, Angie and served in our finest China cutlery.
From Sausage rolls and pork pies to sandwiches and mini pizzas; Danish pastries and chocolate eclairs to scones with jam and cream, our residents were spoilt for choice.
“I loved the food,” said Sally, one of our long-time residents, “Especially the pastries and eclairs.”
“The quiz was fun,” smiled Margery, who really enjoyed the event, “And the sausage rolls.”
Ann told us that she felt really special thanks to the cutlery. “It was all so beautiful, and we felt like royalty.”
“Hammerwich Hall is all about our community,” said Peter Bharj, Home Manager. “We really want to create a special place for our residents, staff, and for everyone connected to this Home.
“We can do so much for each other’s wellbeing, and celebrating St George’s Day is special as it symbolises the victory of light over darkness, and St George’s selfless example echoes Advinia’s core values of Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Commitment and Competence.”
Thank you to our residents, relatives, colleagues and volunteers for making St George’s Day at Hammerwich extra special.
