Goldielea Care Home Celebrates Guid Nychburris with Local Traditions and Treasured Memories
1 July 2025
Goldielea Care Home in Dumfries joined in the town’s much-loved Guid Nychburris celebrations with a week full of local pride, special visitors, and joyful reflection. Meaning “Good Neighbours,” Guid Nychburris is Dumfries’ traditional gala day, culminating in a vibrant parade on the third Saturday in June — and Goldielea made sure residents felt at the heart of it all.
On Thursday, excitement filled the home as the Guid Nychburris Principles — including the Cornet, Cornet’s Lass, Liners, and the Queen of the South with her attendants — paid a visit to meet residents. The guests were warmly welcomed as they took time to chat, answer questions, and hear cherished memories from those who had been part of the celebrations in years gone by.
Two of our residents shared they had once been attendants for the Queen of the South while in high school — a proud moment revisited as they were surprised with personalised sashes reading “Past Attendant.” One resident reflected, “It takes me back to when I was at school. We had our dresses specially made for Guid Nychburris — I was at the high school when I got picked.”
The Cornet also took the time to greet residents in their rooms, with one gentleman proudly saying, “I’ve seen every Cornet for Guid Nychburris!”
On Saturday, the celebrations continued as residents gathered to watch the ride-outs streamed on YouTube and the 5pm parade via Facebook Live. The atmosphere was festive with shandies and mocktails flowing, and many smiles shared as horses trotted across the screen. “I love watching the horses — it’s as good as being there!” one resident beamed.
It was a week filled with nostalgia, connection, and community spirit — everything that makes Guid Nychburris, and Goldielea, feel like home.
