Goldielea Care Home Hosts Heartfelt Afternoon Tea in Honour of VE Day

26 May 2025

Goldielea Care Home recently welcomed friends and family for a special afternoon tea, bringing residents and loved ones together in a warm and nostalgic celebration to mark VE Day.

In preparation for the event, a small group of residents joined staff in decorating the dining area with handmade bunting, creating a festive and patriotic atmosphere. The afternoon began with a showing of the classic film The Dam Busters, setting the tone for a day of remembrance and reflection.

At 3pm, the tea party commenced with a delicious spread accompanied by a playlist of 1940s music. Several families and friends joined the residents, creating a lively and heartfelt gathering filled with singing, laughter, and shared memories.

The celebration held particular meaning for one resident whose birthday coincided with the event. She was just three years old at the end of the war and recalled the experience of growing up during post-war rationing. Another resident, now in her 90s, shared vivid memories of a street party that took place at the war’s end, describing how neighbours pooled their resources to make the day special.

Many residents reflected on loved ones lost during the war, and conversations turned to the importance of remembering those who fought to protect freedom. “We talked about how thankful we are to those who served,” a staff member shared.

To round off the afternoon, residents gathered to watch a replay of the official London VE Day parade, ensuring everyone could take part in the national tribute, even if they had missed the live broadcast.
