Goldielea Residents Reconnect with Childhood Memories During Heartwarming Visit to Cargenbridge Primary

23 May 2025

As part of Dementia Action Week, residents from Goldielea Care Home took a joyful trip down memory lane with the help of their intergenerational partners at Cargenbridge Primary School.

On Tuesday 20th May, a group of nine residents visited the school for a special afternoon of stories, music, and meaningful connection. Welcomed warmly by staff and students, the residents were invited into the classroom where the children had prepared thoughtful questions about school life in years gone by.

From uniforms and punishments to favourite subjects, the conversation sparked laughter and surprise. The children were particularly taken aback by some of the old-school disciplinary methods – many agreeing they were glad to be in school now rather than back then! When asked about favourite school memories, one resident fondly recalled her love for singing and dancing (but not maths!), prompting an impromptu performance that had everyone smiling.

Another resident shared how gym class and football were the highlights of their school days, creating a beautiful bridge between past and present experiences. In return, the children sang a selection of five songs, with residents joining in for the Scottish classic “Ye Cannae Shove Yer Grannie Aff a Bus”, filling the room with laughter and nostalgia.

After the musical exchange, the group moved to the school hall for refreshments and smaller group conversations. These one-to-one chats were filled with curiosity and warmth — from a resident bonding with a young Queen of the South supporter, to another being impressed by a student who proudly shared details of his own YouTube channel.

The visit was a highlight of the year, creating genuine connections and mutual admiration between generations. One resident beautifully summed it up:

“It’s nice to see the children, it reminds me of when mine were young. They are just lovely.”

The team at Goldielea looks forward to welcoming the children to the care home again before the school summer break. The friendships formed through this intergenerational project have been truly heartwarming, enriching lives on both sides.
