Golfhill Care Home Marks VE Day 80th Anniversary with Heartfelt Celebration

26 May 2025

On Thursday 8th May 2025, Golfhill Care Home hosted a moving and memorable garden party to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking eight decades since the end of World War II in Europe. Residents, staff, and families gathered to honour the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of the wartime generation.

The home’s beautifully decorated garden became the heart of the celebration, filled with music, laughter, and touching tributes. Nostalgic wartime tunes played throughout the day, stirring memories and conversations among the residents.

One of the highlights of the event was a special performance by resident Betty, who gave an emotional rendition of one of Vera Lynn’s iconic songs. Her heartfelt singing brought tears to the eyes of many as it transported everyone back to a time of courage, resilience, and hope.

“Our residents were so engaged and full of emotion,” said a member of staff. “It was truly a privilege to honour our veterans in this way.”

The in-house chefs added a sweet touch to the occasion with a delicious spread of cakes and treats, carefully prepared for the event.

Family members praised the efforts of the team. One said, “Fantastic effort by all the staff for the residents today. What a fabulous celebration of VE Day, and the cakes looked amazing! Well done all at Golfhill.”

Residents also shared their thoughts. John said he felt “blessed to be part of the celebrations,” Craig called it “a beautiful day,” and Mary proudly remembered her two brothers who fought in the war. Rose added, “It was nice to all celebrate together.”

It was a day filled with warmth, remembrance, and community spirit – a fitting tribute to those who shaped history.
