Hillview Care Home Brings St. Patrick’s Day Magic with Gold Grab Sensory Activity

1 April 2025

Residents at Hillview Care Home enjoyed a festive and laughter-filled St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Monday, 17th March, with a delightful ‘Gold Grab’ sensory activity. The event took place across all five units throughout the day, ensuring that both residents in the lounges and those in their rooms could take part in the fun. The activity was facilitated by a member of the wellbeing team, along with Carer Cara, who added an extra element of joy by dressing in an inflatable leprechaun costume.

The Gold Grab activity was a playful and engaging way to celebrate the holiday. Residents searched through a pot filled with shredded tissue, feeling their way to hidden gold chocolate coins. The sensory aspect of the activity provided gentle stimulation for their hands while also adding an element of surprise and excitement. Staff members, dressed as cheerful leprechauns, carried the pot of gold around to each resident, making sure everyone had the chance to join in on the fun. The highlight, of course, was the moment of discovery—finding the chocolate coins and enjoying the sweet reward afterward.

Traditional Irish music played throughout the day, filling the home with a lively atmosphere. Many residents joined in singing classic songs like ‘Tell Me Ma,’ while others clapped along. Carer Cara entertained everyone with her enthusiastic Irish dancing in the inflatable leprechaun costume, which brought plenty of laughter and joy.

Some residents were joined by their loved ones, who happily got involved in the treasure hunt, sharing in the fun of finding gold coins. The joy on residents’ faces made it clear how much they enjoyed the activity.

“Oooh look, it’s chocolate!” said Elsie excitedly.

“That’s great! Can I eat it now?” asked Anne eagerly.

The event was a resounding success, with residents thoroughly enjoying the interactive element and, of course, the delicious chocolate treats.
