Meet Piotr Mrugala: Bringing Passion, Tradition and Care to Every Plate at Bishops Cleeve
25 March 2026
Piotr Mrugala brings warmth, professionalism and a genuine passion for food to his role as Head Chef at Bishops Cleeve Care Home.
Originally from Poland, Piotr developed his love for cooking at a young age, inspired by the rich traditions of home-cooked meals and the joy that good food can bring to people’s lives. His culinary journey has taken him through a variety of restaurant kitchens, where he steadily refined his skills, creativity and confidence before moving to England fourteen years ago to continue his professional growth.
Shortly after arriving in the UK, Piotr began working within a care home kitchen and quickly discovered how meaningful his role could be in supporting the wellbeing of older people. Seeing the appreciation residents showed for nourishing, thoughtfully prepared meals inspired him to build his career within the care sector.
Since joining Advinia Health Care in 2022, Piotr has shown dedication and determination in developing his leadership skills, progressing to his current position as Head Chef.
Each day begins early for Piotr, who starts work at 6:30am preparing fresh vegetables and homemade soups before carefully reviewing menus and organising the day’s service. He takes great pride in ensuring meals are delivered punctually and presented to a high standard, always tailored to individual dietary needs. Working closely with the care team, Piotr considers factors such as diabetes management, allergies and gluten-free requirements, ensuring residents receive balanced meals that are both nutritious and comforting.
For Piotr, food is about far more than nutrition; it is about connection, memories, and happiness. He spends time speaking with residents to understand their favourite meals, cultural backgrounds, and personal tastes. Whether incorporating traditional dishes into the menu or preparing a special treat for a birthday or celebration, Piotr’s thoughtful and flexible approach helps residents feel heard, valued and at home.
A recent highlight in Piotr’s professional journey has been his participation in the Advinia Health Care South Regional Chef of the Year competition, held at Xcelerate with Edgbaston. Competing alongside talented chefs from across the region, Piotr proudly showcased a dish inspired by his Polish heritage, Medallions of Pork Rolls Stuffed with Bacon, Onion and Gherkins, served with potatoes, red cabbage and carrot. Rich, hearty and deeply rooted in traditional family cooking, the dish reflects both his culinary expertise and his passion for sharing authentic flavours with residents. Reaching this final regional heat ahead of the grand final in Manchester has been an exciting milestone and a testament to Piotr’s commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. One of the most rewarding aspects of his role is the feedback he receives from residents. A simple thank you or seeing smiles in the dining room reinforces his belief that good food plays a vital role in maintaining both physical strength and emotional wellbeing. Outside of work, Piotr enjoys cooking for his young twin children, introducing them to new tastes and cuisines. A passionate football fan and dedicated supporter of Manchester United, he also enjoys spending time with his family and playing football together whenever possible. Through his professionalism, passion and drive to enhance quality and dining experiences, Piotr plays an important role in enriching daily life at Bishops Cleeve Care Home, ensuring every meal is prepared with care, pride and a genuine desire to make residents happy
