Netherton Green Care Home Celebrates Opening of Beautiful New Sensory Garden

Residents, families and guests gathered at Netherton Green Care Home to celebrate the official opening of the home’s beautiful new sensory garden with a memorable 1940s-themed garden party.

The ribbon was officially cut by Councillor Adam Aston and his partner, Ben Middleton, marking the opening of a peaceful outdoor space designed to enrich the lives of residents through nature, colour and sensory experiences.

Created with flowers, plants and wildlife in mind, the new sensory garden provides residents with a tranquil environment where they can enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas of the outdoors. The space has been thoughtfully designed to encourage relaxation, social interaction and wellbeing, with particular benefits for residents living with dementia.

To mark the occasion, Home Manager Fiona Sewera and her team embraced the 1940s theme by dressing in vintage attire, creating a fun-filled day of music, delicious food and outdoor entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

Fiona Sewera said:

“We were thrilled that Councillor Aston and Ben could join us and declare the Netherton Green sensory garden open.

“It’s wonderful to have this resource for the residents so they can enjoy spending time outdoors, which is good for the body and the spirit. The sensory garden will be particularly beneficial for residents living with dementia as the stimulation it offers is so good for mental wellbeing.”

Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, singer Chloe Jeens entertained residents and guests with a lively performance featuring much-loved wartime classics, while everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch complete with a cheeseboard and colourful fruit display.

Residents thoroughly embraced the celebrations.

Joe Owen, 82, said:

“I really enjoyed the whole day, it was amazing. It was really nice mixing with everyone.”

Meanwhile, fellow resident Mary Griffin, 90, enjoyed reconnecting with local civic life.

She said:

“I thought the event was well put together and enjoyable. It was lovely to talk to Adam as I used to be the deputy mayor in Sandwell, so we had plenty to talk about.”

The opening of the sensory garden marks an exciting addition to life at Netherton Green, providing residents with a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy throughout the year. By combining nature, meaningful activities and community involvement, the garden will help support residents’ physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, ensuring many more memorable moments can be shared outdoors for years to come.
