Netherton Green Care Home’s Garden Revamp: A Heartwarming Community Effort
30 September 2024
Netherton Green Care Home recently experienced a transformative day as volunteers from Blacks Vets, led by Tracey Tripicchio and Chelsae Carey, came together for a community project to revamp the home’s main garden. With the help of 12 enthusiastic volunteers, the team worked tirelessly, utilising donated plants and pots to create a beautiful outdoor space for residents to enjoy.
The volunteers not only focused on the garden’s appearance but also brought along some children, fostering intergenerational connections. One resident, Jean Williams, shared a delightful lunch in the garden with the children, reveling in their company and beaming with joy throughout the afternoon. The team also placed plants outside residents’ patio windows, ensuring that those unable to venture outside could still appreciate the garden’s beauty.
Coincidentally, the garden revamp coincided with a resident’s birthday celebration, which saw many family members in attendance. Resident, Graham Jackson, who is currently at end of life, enjoyed the festivities outdoors with his family. He expressed his gratitude, noting that the garden looked brilliant after the volunteers pruned a large rose bush outside his window, allowing him to see birds at the bird table from his bed.
Jean, who typically speaks very little, was full of smiles and exclaimed that “everything is beautiful,” spending nearly four hours outside, reluctant to return indoors. She continuously remarked on how lovely the experience was.
One of the volunteers shared, “I just think it was amazing for everyone to pull together to get the garden looking so tidy. I’m very passionate about my job and want the best for the residents. Seeing their faces while we worked was emotional, especially watching Jean so happy with the children in the garden.”
The heartfelt collaboration not only beautified Netherton Green Care Home’s garden but also strengthened community bonds, bringing joy and connection to both residents and volunteers alike.
