Newcarron Residents Enjoy Scenic Barge Trip with the Seagull Trust
9 July 2025
Residents at Newcarron Care Home were recently treated to a delightful afternoon out on the Govan Seagull Trust barge, sailing along the picturesque Forth and Clyde Canal.
Blessed with beautiful weather and breathtaking views, the journey offered Residents the chance to admire local landmarks including the iconic Steeple, the majestic Kelpies—Duke and Baron—in the distance, and the rolling Ochil Hills beyond. Adding to the charm, a family of ducklings followed the barge closely, much to the joy and laughter of everyone on board.
One of the volunteers onboard, Reverend Gunn, took time to chat with the Residents, including John, who was touched to meet a fellow member of St Andrew’s Church in Bo’ness. John was saddened to learn that the church will soon be closing and merging with Bo’ness Old Kirk, but found comfort in reminiscing about its long history.
The trip was made possible by the incredible team at the Seagull Trust, a local charity dedicated to providing accessible canal cruising experiences. The charity also runs a wonderful bookshop and café on Falkirk High Street, known for its delicious home baking. Proceeds from the shop support the ongoing maintenance of the charity’s fleet of barges.
“It was such a peaceful and scenic day,” said one staff member. “Our Residents were so relaxed and uplifted by the gentle cruise and the warm welcome from the crew.”
A heartfelt thank you to the Seagull Trust for making this memorable experience possible—it was a truly special afternoon filled with nature, nostalgia, and connection.
