Pony Magic and Tiny Visitors Bring Joy to Residents at Madeira House Care Home
15 April 2025
Madeira House Care Home was filled with smiles, laughter, and the gentle clatter of tiny hooves on Friday, 28th March, as residents were treated to a heartwarming visit from two ponies and a lively group of local children.
The event, which was inspired by a casual chat in the home’s lounge, quickly became one of the most memorable afternoons for everyone involved.
“We had two ponies called Jo and Bugs who have the most calming, therapeutic personality,” said a member of the care team, who organised the visit from Rainbow Dreaming CIC. “The idea came from a group conversation we had one afternoon. Some of our residents spoke about working or living on farms and how much they enjoyed being around horses. That same day, I started researching, and when I found out pony visits were possible — we booked it straight away.”
Adding to the joy of the day, 15 children from Greenwich House School & Crèche, aged between 18 months and five years, joined the residents for a truly intergenerational experience.
Mary and John, a married couple who had spent much of their lives on a farm, were especially delighted. “John had so much to talk about with the pony handlers,” said a staff member. “He asked about the size of the land the ponies lived on and shared stories about his own farm. Both he and Mary loved stroking and cuddling the ponies.”
Mary, a regular advocate for more visits from the local children, was overjoyed. “She was so happy to see the children’s faces light up when the ponies walked into the lounges,” staff said. “She asked the children questions about the ponies and loved seeing them interact so freely.”
The residents’ reactions spoke volumes. Barry exclaimed with excitement, “Yeeha! Let’s get my saddle and boots on and off we go!”
Jen shared a touching sentiment: “When riding a horse, we leave our fears, troubles, and sadness behind on the ground.”
Garry expressed heartfelt thanks, saying, “Thank you so much for getting the ponies in. I have had the best afternoon. This has brought back so many childhood memories.”
One resident even joked, “Can he stay and live with me forever? We can keep him in the garden of Madeira House!”
Denise, another resident, cherished the time spent with the young visitors: “I loved sitting with the children and chatting about their day.”
Events like this are more than just entertainment — they’re moments of connection, nostalgia, and pure joy. The team at Madeira House continues to create meaningful experiences that bridge generations, stir memories, and bring comfort and companionship to all who live there.
