Ryland View Care Home Residents Enjoy BHappie Hour with Pet Therapy

9 August 2024

Yesterday afternoon, Ryland View Care Home hosted a special event for its residents and staff as part of their BHappie initiative. The care home transformed into a lively petting zoo, allowing everyone to engage in a therapeutic experience with a variety of animals. This heartwarming occasion was designed to foster a sense of community and connection among residents, staff, and their families.

The BHappie initiative at Ryland View emphasises the importance of activities that bring together the entire care home community. The event featured an array of animals, including chinchillas, snakes, rabbits, skunks, tortoises, and a giant frog, delighting everyone who attended. The pet therapy session aimed to evoke positive emotions, joy, and nostalgia for the residents, bringing back cherished memories and smiles.

“Our residents enjoyed our pet therapy session, which brought a lot of enjoyment, smiles, and remembrance back to their lives,” said Sarah, activities coordinator at Ryland View Care Home. “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.”

One of the highlights of the afternoon was when resident Gary discovered a special connection with one of the rabbits, who happened to share his name. “Our resident Gary was overly happy that the rabbit had the same name as him,” Sarah added.

Michelle, a cook at Ryland View, had a similar experience when she met her namesake, Michelle the tortoise. “I have found my name twin Michelle the tortoise, how lovely is she!” Michelle exclaimed, posing for a photo with her reptilian counterpart.

The event also sparked fond memories for several residents, including Mick, who reminisced about his past as a snake owner. “I used to own a snake of my own,” Mick shared with a smile. “It is lovely to be able to be around one again.”

Another resident, Edith, who is 99 years old, expressed her delight at seeing the tortoises. “Oh, how lovely,” Edith remarked. “I used to have a few tortoises of my own when I was a child, and I’m now back with them again. Thank you!”

Sarah, highlighted the positive impact of bringing the animals to residents who may not typically engage in activities. “I’m so glad we got to take the animals around the bedrooms,” Sarah said. “Karen, one of our residents who doesn’t usually wish to interact with any activities, thoroughly enjoyed seeing them. It brought her mood up, and it was lovely to see!”

The pet therapy session at Ryland View Care Home was a resounding success, with residents and staff alike cherishing the opportunity to connect with the animals and each other. The event provided a meaningful experience that reminded everyone of the joy and comfort that animals can bring into our lives. As the BHappie initiative continues to foster a sense of community and well-being, Ryland View is committed to creating more moments like these for its residents and staff.
