Small Activities, Big Smiles: A Nostalgic Typewriter Afternoon at Maycroft Care Home
15 April 2025
At Maycroft Care Home, we’ve always believed that it’s the little things that bring the biggest joy—and our recent typewriter activity proved just that.
Many of our residents spent their working lives as secretaries, typists, or office assistants, and were once lightning-fast on manual typewriters. So when we introduced a beautifully preserved vintage typewriter for an afternoon activity, it was an instant hit. As soon as their fingers touched the familiar keys, memories came flooding back.
“The sound of the keys brought it all back—I haven’t typed in years, but my fingers remembered,” said one resident.
“It felt so natural. I used to type letters and reports every day—no computers back then, just focus and a good ribbon!” another shared, with a smile.
Even those who hadn’t used a typewriter before got involved, enjoying the tactile feel of the keys and trying their hand at typing their names.
“I didn’t think I’d be any good, but it was great fun. I managed to type out my full name.”
The sound of typing sparked wonderful conversations, with the room soon filled with laughter and heartfelt memories.
This simple yet powerful activity not only encouraged engagement and reminiscence but also created a beautiful sense of connection among residents.
At Maycroft, it’s moments like these that remind us how meaningful and rewarding small activities can truly be.
