West Ridings Care Home Celebrates a Remarkable 100th Birthday
3 February 2026
There was a very special celebration at West Ridings Care Home on 22nd January, as one of our much-loved residents, Mrs Ivy Dobson, proudly turned 100 years old.
Ivy has lived a full and hardworking life. She spent many years working for a wool manufacturing company called Patons and Baldwins, where she operated knitting machines and worked her way up, a job she remembers fondly and thoroughly enjoyed. After retiring, Ivy continued to keep busy, taking on various cleaning jobs, including cleaning at her local pub.
At around 21 years old, Ivy married her husband Kenneth Dobson, and together they built a loving family, welcoming two children, Gwendoline and Kenneth. When reflecting on her life, Ivy shared that her greatest achievement has been “getting married and having children.”
When asked about the secret to living to 100, Ivy smiled and said it was “good living, good fun and having a good laugh.” She added that she has no particular advice for reaching such a milestone, simply to “have a good life, live day by day and plod on.”
Ivy was over the moon with the many cards and presents she received, especially her birthday card from the King and Queen, which made the occasion even more memorable. She celebrated her big day with a party at the care home, surrounded by family, fellow residents, and staff. Entertainment was provided by Ukulele Henry, a singer Ivy has enjoyed before, while the kitchen team prepared a lovely buffet and cupcakes. Ivy’s family also brought along a birthday cake and sweet treats to share.
It was a truly joyful day, filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments, a perfect way for Ivy to celebrate her incredible milestone with family and friends around her.
