West Ridings Care Home Rings in Chinese New Year with a Reptile Encounter

14 April 2025

West Ridings Care Home celebrated the Chinese New Year in truly unique style, marking the Year of the Snake with a fascinating interactive reptile handling session, thanks to a special visit from Owl Adventures.

The experience brought a mix of excitement and nerves among both residents and staff as they prepared to meet real-life snakes and lizards. Our knowledgeable handler, Robyn, arrived with an impressive lineup: an Eastern Black King snake, a Carpet Python, a Bearded Dragon, and a Gekko. Her warm and engaging approach helped put everyone at ease, answering questions and encouraging safe interaction with the reptiles.

While initial reactions varied, the calm nature of the lizards quickly won many over. Resident George, while holding the Gekko, said, “What a beautiful colour, I’ve really enjoyed it.” Another resident, Nigel, was especially taken with the Bearded Dragon, joking that it was so comfortable on his shoulder it was going to stay there permanently. His son, who happened to be visiting, said he was thrilled to witness the moment.

The snakes initially received a more hesitant response, but many residents, even those who admitted to being afraid, bravely reached out to touch or hold them. They were surprised to find the snakes soft, smooth, and heavier than expected.

Robyn also made sure those who remained in their rooms didn’t miss out. Margaret, who had been dreading the visit, eventually overcame her fears enough to touch the python and was proud of herself for doing so. Meanwhile, June held all the animals with joy, saying, “Thank you for bringing them, I’ve loved it!”

It was a memorable afternoon filled with courage, curiosity, and connection — a perfect way to embrace the spirit of the New Year.
