A Day to Remember: Bedford Care Home Shines at the Wigan Care Olympics

2 September 2024

On Wednesday, the 21st of August, Bedford Care Home residents Peter, Eileen, and John set out for an extraordinary day at the Wigan Care Olympics, held at the Robin Park Leisure Centre. The event was filled with excitement, camaraderie, and community spirit, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the incredible volunteers and Wigan Council staff, who made us feel right at home. Each of our residents was handed an Olympic torch, a symbol of the friendly competition ahead. We proudly donned our custom-made t-shirts with our team name, “The Bedford Happie Bees,” and matching baby blue ribbons for our team colour, and a big surprise visit from our residents’ families who came to cheer us on.

The day was packed with a variety of Olympic-style games, and our residents eagerly participated in each one. From darts to balloon tennis, javelin to cushion cone throwing, everyone had their moment to shine. A mini dance break between games added to the fun and kept spirits high. The enthusiasm was infectious as we cheered not only for our own team but for the other local homes as well.

Peter was a star when it came to the throwing events, especially in basketball, where he made an impressive six swishes. Eileen showed her skills in games that required precision and agility. Her determination in balloon tennis was unmatched, keeping the balloon off the ground for a remarkable 120 seconds! John, who had a hidden talent in javelin, threw the air rocket over 10 meters, later revealing that he had won javelin awards in his younger days. He also excelled in darts, scoring three ‘100’ throws.

The day ended on a high note with a heartfelt team hug, joined by Wigan Council workers who couldn’t resist the warm and positive energy of our group. It was a touching moment that captured the true essence of the event—community, friendship, and joy.
As a special treat, we were introduced to a beautiful guide dog puppy in training. Our residents were thrilled to give the puppy cuddles and scratches, contributing to its early socialization—a perfect way to end an already perfect day.
The Wigan Care Olympics was more than just a day of competition; it was a celebration of community and togetherness. Our residents not only competed with pride as the “Bedford Happie Bees” but also bonded with residents from other homes. The sense of unity and shared joy was truly inspiring.
This event was a beautiful reminder of the importance of staying active, engaged, and connected, and we couldn’t be prouder of our residents for their participation and sportsmanship. Here’s to more days like this, filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories!
