Care Home Wins National Award for Community Foodbank

12 October 2023

Haydale is home to around 55 residents and provides care for elderly people, residents living with dementia and younger adults with learning disabilities.
Wellbeing Coordinators, Isabel Cummings and Kirstin Millar, recently received an invitation to attend the NAPA (National Activity Providers Association) Awards Ceremony in London on Friday 6th October.
Isabel and Kirstin travelled with high hopes after being nominated as one of only 3 finalists across the UK. They were in the category of ‘Connected Communities’ which was a tribute to all of the fantastic links they have built with local churches, schools, clubs, YMCA and of course the Foodbank.
Isabel said, “Being nominated was a great achievement and we were really happy not only for us but for the residents who worked so hard on this project. To win has been a great accomplishment for everyone involved.”
As finalists the two ladies were treated to a hotel stay with dinner and wine by Advinia Healthcare who own Haydale Care Home and operate 36 Care Homes in Scotland and England. However, the trip didn’t go as smoothly as planned, nonetheless it worked out in their favour in the end. Isabel added “When we arrived in London it was 24 degrees and the sun was shining but when we went for our train home we were told that due to severe rain in Scotland the trains were all cancelled! We got over the disappointment by enjoying an extra night in London in the sunshine and eventually made it home the next day.”
Isabel’s colleague, Kirstin, said “We wanted to give back to our local community, we never expected a thank you for it but to receive this award has been the biggest thank you we could ever have asked for. The judges told us that when they saw our entry they couldn’t not vote for us. We are now focusing on our next project which is to provide a warm and welcoming Winter Hub where local vulnerable people can meet and eat for a few hours and socialise in a safe and friendly environment.”
