Community Spirit Blossoms at Netherton Green with Resident-Led Garden Project
3 June 2025

A patch of greenery at Netherton Green Care Home has been given a new lease of life, thanks to the determination of one resident and the kindness of staff and their families.
It all started when Graham Lane, a resident who enjoys sitting outside one of the houses at Netherton Green, noticed the garden near the entrance had become a little overgrown. In particular, a small but much-loved fern tree was beginning to wilt. Wanting to bring some life and colour back to the space, Graham decided to take matters into his own hands.

“I wanted to try and save the plant and make the garden look more inviting,” Graham said. “So I got on my iPad and started researching how to care for it.”
His efforts quickly inspired others. Clare, a member of the kitchen team, offered to give up her Friday—her usual day off—to help Graham tidy up the area. Her gesture sparked a wave of support, with other staff members and even two staff families stepping in to lend a hand.

Once the garden was cleared and prepped, the real transformation began. Graham chose flowers to plant, carefully weeded the area, and even painted some garden ornaments to brighten the space. Together, the team brought colour, care, and creativity back to the entrance of the home.
Perhaps the proudest moment of all: the once-struggling fern has now been saved and is thriving again, standing as a quiet symbol of what can be achieved through teamwork, compassion, and a shared love for nature.

“We’re so proud that we all came together to make Graham’s little project work,” said a member of staff. “It’s now a lovely, welcoming spot for everyone who walks through the door.”
The newly revived garden now serves as a cheerful entrance to Netherton Green—and a daily reminder of the power of community.
