Generations Unite for Joyful Community Week at Elderslie Care Home
1 August 2025
Children from a local nursery brought joy, laughter, and delicious home baking to Elderslie Care Home this week as part of their Community Week celebrations – continuing a heartwarming intergenerational link that has been blossoming for over a year.
Throughout the week, the children explored different community roles through engaging visits from the fire service, a vet, a park ranger, and a dentist. But it was their special trip to Elderslie that created some of the most treasured memories – for both the children and the residents.
The partnership between the nursery and Elderslie has gone from strength to strength, with monthly visits bringing generations together through shared activities, conversation, and companionship. These sessions provide incredible benefits – supporting emotional wellbeing, boosting confidence, and sparking plenty of smiles on both sides.
This month’s visit featured three imaginative activity stations designed to showcase daily life inside the care home:
-
At the Nurses’ Station, children learned to take blood pressure and check temperatures – even giving pretend “injections” of strawberry jam into sponge cakes!
-
At the Maintenance Station, they stacked blocks, fixed the nurse call system, and tried their hand at simple plumbing tasks.
-
At the Kitchen Station, residents and children teamed up to bake and decorate traditional empire biscuits, which were proudly shared and savoured together.
Fiona, Nursery Manager, said:
“These visits are incredibly special. We see children who are usually quiet come alive with confidence and enthusiasm. The relationships they form with the residents are heartfelt and lasting.”
Gemma, Nursery Supervisor, added:
“There’s something magical about these interactions. It’s not just an activity – it’s a bond between two generations who have so much to give and receive.”
Residents were equally delighted. Margaret and Cathie agreed:
“The children were so polite and full of life – it really makes our day to have them here.”
Margaret Leggat smiled as she recalled her favourite part:
“They were the nicest empire biscuits I’ve ever had – and the children made them with such care.”
The children had their own highlights to share.
Molly said: “I loved dressing up as a nurse – and taking everyone’s temperature!”
Niamh added: “I liked making the cakes – and eating them too!”
Home Manager Richard Murray reflected on the power of this partnership:
“This is about more than just a visit – it’s about connection. These intergenerational relationships support emotional and cognitive wellbeing for our residents, and they teach children the true meaning of kindness, care, and community. It’s one of the most rewarding partnerships we’ve ever had.”
As the nursery prepares for their next visit, everyone at Elderslie is already looking forward to another month of shared laughter, learning, and unforgettable moments – reminding us all of the beauty that blooms when generations come together.
