Hammerwich Hall Marks VE Day 80 with Patriotic Bakes, Music and Memories

27 May 2025

The country was in full swing between 5 May until 8 May 2025, commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) with a two-minute national silence at 12:00 on 8 May, a live concert titled VE Day 80: A Celebration to Remember, on BBC One, and a display of nearly 30,000 ceramic poppies to mark the occasion at the Tower of London.

On Thursday 7 May 2025, residents, families and colleagues at Hammerwich Hall Care Home celebrated VE Day with a commemorative baking session, making vanilla cupcakes with red, white and blue icing, eagerly awaiting the fruits of their hard work with afternoon tea.

On Friday 8 May 2025, residents enjoyed the live broadcast of VE Day celebration on their large screen communal television, which was followed by a traditional tea party in the dining hall served on our fine china cutlery, which our residents adore. The mood set with vintage music from the 1940’s, it was a celebration to remember.

The residents enjoyed savoury snacks, which consisted of baps with salmon, tuna, ham, corn beef and cheese, to pork pies, sausage rolls, and cocktail sausages.

There were vanilla cupcakes, scones with jam and cream, chocolate eclairs and a selection of Danish pastries, not to mention the healthy alternatives, such as a freshly prepared fruit salad including strawberries, oranges, bananas, melons, pears and grapes.

Everyone made a special effort to join in the celebration by wearing red, white and blue clothing, and our Wellbeing Coordinator, Paulina, decked the halls with Union Jacks.

“I really enjoyed the celebration,” said Jean, a resident, “Especially the bubbly drink and fresh fruit salad, which was so refreshing.”

“Paulina, as always, arranged a lovely afternoon,” said Nikki, a relative, “Thank you so much and very well done.”

“As always, we do our best to commemorate special days, and especially VE Day, which means so much to everyone in England,” said Peter Bharj, Home Manager. “We are forever grateful to all those who gave their lives so we could enjoy the freedom that we do today. We are forever in their debt.”

Thank you to everyone at Hammerwich Hall for making VE Day 2025 extra special.
