Haydale Care Home’s Unique Bonfire Night Celebrations
8 November 2023

The traditional bonfire night at Haydale Care Home took a unique turn this year as residents gathered for an alternative celebration that embraced different methods to ensure the residents had a memorable and enjoyable experience without the loud bangs and bright lights of fireworks.
Instead of traditional fireworks, the care home organised a Fireworks Arts and Crafts session and a Home Baking session to ensure everyone had a memorable experience.

In the Learning Disabilities unit, residents made their own ‘fireworks’ using crepe paper, showcasing their artistic talents.

In the Dementia unit, residents participated in a bonfire-themed baking session, crafting chocolate sparklers and firework cupcakes.
Resident, Alice, aged 67, expressed her joy, stating, “It was much more fun than being out in the cold.” Rose McLean, aged 97, commended the idea, saying, “What a great idea, as fireworks aren’t for everyone.”

This unique approach highlights the importance of accommodating different preferences and needs within a care home community, making the celebration inclusive and enjoyable for all.
