Intergenerational Links Spread Joy at Care Home

31 October 2023

Netherton Green Care Home and Priory Park Community School both took part in a lunch time experience in the care home where the children and the elderly residents got together to make and eat pizzas together!
Care Home Manager, Jack Hendy, said “Intergenerational links in the local community should be celebrated. There is a wonderful bond between the elderly and the young which has huge benefits for them both. It helps promote empathy, respect and unity as well as helping to develop social skills and generally increase well-being. To watch the Residents and the children interacting so well was a fantastic and inspiring experience for everyone involved.”
Priory Park Community School provides essential support for young people with social, emotional and mental health difficulties and focuses on a balanced curriculum as well as sporting and other meaningful activities.
Netherton Green is home to 30 elderly residents and provides residential and nursing care. Jack added “A huge part of daily life in the care home revolves around activities and meal times so by combining them both in such an innovative and fun way created some great memories. Our Wellbeing Coordinator, Karen, goes above and beyond to ensure that events like this take place regularly and the benefits are clear for all to see.”
Resident Graham Lane, Aged 83, (pictured below) has been living in the Care Home for almost 4 years. He said “It’s really nice to be in touch with the younger generation and I hope that we can give them some of our wisdom. We can tell from their reaction that they enjoy coming to see us and it’s a very enjoyable experience”
The bond is set to continue as this is now going to be a regular event.
The care home also has links with pre-nursery groups who bring the children in to meet the Residents every month and they enjoy doing arts and crafts together.
