20 March 2024
Vera’s 104th birthday was a remarkable occasion at Longwood Grange. Born into a bustling household with three sisters and a brother on Leymoor Road in Golcar on March 4th, 1920, Vera’s journey has been one of resilience and warmth.
Throughout most of her working years, she diligently served as a warper at C and J Hirst Textile Mill in Longwood, showcasing her dedication and work ethic. It was during this time that she met and married Edward Twigg on November 12th, 1940. Their union faced the challenges of wartime separation, enduring six years apart before they could fully embrace their life together. In 1946, their joy expanded with the arrival of their daughter, Sheila. Together, they weathered life’s storms and eventually settled in Marsh, building a cherished home where their memories flourished.
In 1988, Vera bid farewell to her beloved husband, Edward, entering into the realm of widowhood. Despite the loss and the passage of time claiming her friends, Vera found solace in nurturing her bond with her daughter. Together, they delved into the art of tatting, weaving intricate patterns and crafting heartfelt greetings for their cherished family.
As Vera’s milestone birthday approached, the staff at Longwood Grange pulled out all the stops to ensure her day would be nothing short of spectacular. The halls were adorned with vibrant decorations, echoing with anticipation for the celebration. A magnificent cake took center stage, a testament to the joyous occasion at hand.
Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, Vera was showered with love and well wishes from the staff, each heartfelt sentiment adding to the warmth of the day. With a smile that radiated the wisdom of a century lived, Vera expressed her gratitude, her eyes twinkling with appreciation.
“I have had the most fantastic day,” she shared, her voice filled with emotion. “Thank you, all of you, for making my day so special.”
