Maycroft Care Home Residents Delight in Seaside Escape

13 May 2024

Residents of Maycroft Care Home embarked on a memorable seaside adventure, organised by the Melbourn Dementia Cafe, leaving cherished memories and dreams of future trips in their wake. Four residents, accompanied by loved ones and staff, revelled in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Felixstowe, experiencing the rejuvenating power of the sea.

Pam P, initially apprehensive, found herself swept away by the joy of the day. “I was quite anxious this morning, but I’m really pleased I came,” she shared. “It’s been a wonderful day, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself. Can we come here again on holiday?” Her sentiment echoed by Peter, who overcame his worries to rediscover the joys of the seaside after many years. “I’m so pleased you encouraged me to come,” he remarked. “It’s been great to get back to the seaside!”

For Caroline and Kathy, the daughters of residents Pam A and Brenda, witnessing their mothers’ delight was a source of joy in itself. “There’s something instantly calming about the sea air,” Caroline observed, while Kathy cherished the twinkle in her mother’s eye.

Neshie, the Home Manager, and Lucy, the Wellbeing Coordinator, marvelled at the happiness radiating from the residents throughout the day. “We need to arrange this trip again but bring all our residents,” Neshie declared, highlighting the importance of such outings for the residents’ well-being.

Lucy added, “Trips like this require quite a lot of planning and are tiring, but unbelievable worth it!  I love seeing residents smiling and laughing all day, reminiscing about their time at the seaside and generally having such a wonderful time – it’s such a nice feeling knowing that I helped play a part in the happiness they feel today.  I just wish we could bring them every week!”

Indeed, the day was filled with simple pleasures, from enjoying fish and chips in The Hut overlooking the sea to strolling along the promenade and indulging in ice creams. The brightly coloured beach huts proved to be a particular favourite among the residents, evoking memories of summers past.

As the residents and staff dozed on the coach ride home, lulled by the fresh sea air, plans for future outings began to take shape. Inspired by the success of the trip, Maycroft Care Home will now regularly attend the Melbourn Dementia Cafe in Meldreth, fostering new connections and providing residents with opportunities for socialisation and enjoyment.

As Maycroft Care Home continues to prioritise the well-being and happiness of its residents, outings like these serve as a reminder of the profound impact simple pleasures can have on the human spirit, igniting joy and creating lasting memories for all involved.
