Maycroft Care Home Residents Transported to the Galapagos Islands Through Captivating Talk

9 February 2024

Maycroft Care Home embarked on an exciting journey to the Galapagos Islands without ever leaving the comfort of their community room, thanks to the thoughtful efforts of Wellbeing Coordinator, Lucy, and the local photography club.

In a bid to foster connections with the local community, Lucy reached out to the photography club, seeking volunteers to share their experiences with the residents. Paul Ravenscroft, a member of the club, graciously offered to present a talk on his recent adventure to the Galapagos Islands, showcasing the mesmerising wildlife he encountered.

The presentation, comprised of a captivating slide show and video footage, immersed residents in the rich biodiversity of the Galapagos. Lucy ensured that every resident could participate, printing out fact sheets and large pictures of the wildlife for those who faced challenges with viewing the video.

One resident, Jilly, found herself transported back in time as memories of her own visit to the Galapagos Islands flooded back. She regaled the group with anecdotes, including a humorous tale of a blue-footed booby stowing away on their cruise ship.

The engagement from the residents was overwhelmingly positive, with the majority fully immersed in the presentation. The talk not only provided entertainment but also sparked nostalgia and camaraderie among the attendees.

Inspired by the success of the Galapagos talk, Lucy has organized for the photography club to return quarterly, ensuring a regular dose of enrichment and connection for the residents.
