9 February 2024
The vibrant spirit of Chinese New Year filled the halls of Maycroft Care Home as residents and staff came together to celebrate the occasion in style. Throughout the week leading up to the festivities, the home was abuzz with Chinese New Year-themed activities, from word searches to quizzes and crafts, setting the stage for a memorable celebration.
The highlight of the festivities was a captivating armchair travel session to China, where residents embarked on a virtual journey to explore the rich cultural heritage of the country. This was followed by an enchanting display of traditional dragon dancing, streamed live on television.
As the aroma of Chinese cuisine filled the air, staff and residents gathered eagerly to indulge in a delicious Chinese takeaway feast. The communal meal brought everyone together.
Among the delighted diners was resident Peter E, who exclaimed, “I haven’t had a Chinese takeaway in such a long time… this is lovely!” His sentiment echoed by many others who relished the opportunity to savour the flavours of Chinese cuisine. For some residents, the celebration offered the chance to try new culinary delights, with crispy seaweed making its debut on many plates and winning over newfound fans.
Adding to the festive ambiance were the charming decorations adorning the home, lovingly crafted by residents and staff. Intricate red card decorations featuring resident and staff names written in Chinese characters, alongside whimsical curling dragons and lanterns, all strung up as bunting, created a festive backdrop for the celebrations.
