Loving Schnauzer Leo Wins Hearts At Newcarron Care Home

There’s no competition for the most popular visitor at Newcarron Care Home – therapy dog Leo is number one.

The adorable schnauzer is part of the Pets As Therapy (PAT) programme. He visits Residents once a week with owner Janette, who lives nearby.

As soon as Leo arrives at Newcarron, he knows to pop in to see the hairdresser for a treat before making his way to visit his friends in their rooms and the communal lounge.

Activities Co-ordinator Hazel Phillips says that Leo is a very good boy indeed.

Hazel said: “Leo is adored by all of us – we so look forward to him visiting us every week.

“He’s a very clever dog and so calm. The only time he barks is to let the hairdresser know he’s arrived and to get his first treat, and then he’s off on his duties.

“Leo is such a comfort to Residents because he has a lovely, gentle personality and knows who likes a cuddle straight away and who he needs to approach slowly.

“The Residents love petting him, giving him a treat and spending time in his company. Leo reminds them of the pets they’ve loved over the years.”

Newcarron puppy playtime!

During Leo’s visits, he often spends one-to-one time with Residents in their rooms, and there is a special connection between them.

Recently, Residents have been delighted to see Leo perform a new skill he’s been learning.

Hazel said: “Janette has taught Leo to ring a bell to get his treat – it’s so delightful to watch him.

“It’s impossible not to smile when he dings his bell and looks so pleased with himself!”

Given the popularity of Leo, Hazel has recently invested in a lifelike cat companion which responds to Residents.

The cute cat is robotic and is designed to provide a realistic petting experience to Residents.

Hazel plans to ask friends and family to come up with potential names for the cat through Facebook.

When it arrived in early January, Residents were thrilled to meet the cat and spent a happy morning testing out their new Home pet.
