Pottery Classes Bring Joy to Dementia Residents at Braemount Care Home

12 March 2025

Braemount Care Home recently hosted a heartwarming pottery painting class for two of its dementia residents, offering them a creative and engaging way to express themselves while enhancing motor skills and social interaction. The session proved to be a rewarding and joyful experience, sparking smiles and connection.

For both residents, this was a brand-new experience — one that engaged the senses and allowed them to explore their creativity in a relaxed and supportive environment. Resident Lauretta beamed as she carefully painted a garden Easter gnome, adding her own creative twist to the design. Meanwhile, Bert chose to paint a figure of Garfield the cat, focusing intently on every detail and finding joy in bringing his favourite character to life.

The class was guided by two attentive staff members, who ensured the experience was about self-expression rather than perfection. One staff member shared, “It was so rewarding to see them completely focused and in the moment. Their smiles said it all.”

Lauretta and Bert laughed as they compared their finished creations, admiring each other’s work and sharing stories from the past. “It’s not about how it looks — it’s about how it feels to create something,” said one staff member. “You could see the sense of accomplishment on their faces.”

For those experiencing memory challenges, creative activities like this offer more than just an artistic outlet — they create a bridge between the past and present, unlocking emotions and memories that might otherwise remain unspoken. Braemount Care Home’s pottery class not only provided a therapeutic and enjoyable experience but also strengthened the sense of connection and community among residents and staff. The session proved that creativity can be a powerful tool for emotional well-being and creating lasting memories.
