Running for a Cause: Alma Barn Lodge Staff Member Honours Grandfather’s Memory and Supports Alzheimer’s Society

8 February 2024

In a heartfelt tribute to her late grandfather and all those affected by dementia, Amelia Crook, a staff member at Alma Barn Lodge, is embarking on a remarkable journey of endurance and compassion. After losing her grandfather to dementia in April 2015, Amelia found solace and purpose in channeling her grief into action, dedicating herself to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Having previously participated in the Race for Life, Amelia felt compelled to take on a new challenge, one that would not only push her physical limits but also honour her grandfather’s memory in a meaningful way. With determination and a spirit of altruism, she set her sights on running the Oxford Half Marathon, a feat she had never before attempted.

Charting out a meticulous nine-month training plan, Amelia is committed to gradually building up her stamina and endurance, dedicating four months to reaching the required distance and the subsequent five months to refining her technique and comfort level.

While the physical demands of the marathon loom large, Amelia’s ultimate goal transcends personal achievement. With a fundraising target of £250, she has already made significant strides, raising £180 towards her cause. Every donation, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Alzheimer’s Society and its vital work in supporting individuals and families affected by dementia.

For Amelia, every step of the marathon will be a poignant reminder of her grandfather’s journey and the unwavering support he received during his illness.

In running this marathon, Amelia hopes to shine a light on the importance of dementia awareness and the urgent need for continued research and support services.
