Rutherglen Care Home Fosters Community Spirit at First Tuesday Club

13 March 2024

Last Tuesday, residents of Rutherglen Care Home eagerly boarded the S.V.D.P. wheelchair accessible mini-bus, bound for the cherished First Tuesday Club hosted at St. Columbkille’s Church Hall in Rutherglen. This monthly tradition, held on the first Tuesday of each month, has become a highlight for residents and staff alike.

Established with the noble aim of providing a supportive forum for individuals living with dementia and their dedicated carers, the First Tuesday Club offers a haven of entertainment, stimulation, and camaraderie. Under the kind provision of S.V.D.P., transportation to and from the club is made seamless, allowing residents to participate in the enriching experience with ease.

As the care home residents stepped into the bustling atmosphere of St. Columbkille’s Church Hall, they were greeted by familiar faces and the warm embrace of community spirit. For many, the club serves as a reunion with old friends, evoking cherished memories and fostering a sense of belonging.

This month’s gathering featured a lively singalong session, with residents, carers, and visitors alike joining in harmonious melodies that filled the hall with joy and laughter. Amidst the music and merriment, plenty of refreshments were served, including steaming cups of tea and coffee accompanied by delectable home-baked treats, adding to the convivial atmosphere.

Among the attendees was Mary Coulter, an esteemed member of St. Columbkille’s Parish, who delighted in reconnecting with friends she has known since childhood. With a twinkle in her eye, Mary shared, “It’s great to see my friends; always a good time here in the parochial hall.” Her sentiment echoed the sentiments of many, encapsulating the spirit of warmth and friendship that permeates the First Tuesday Club.

The gathering also welcomed a visiting family member, who seized the opportunity to participate in the festivities alongside their loved one, further strengthening the bonds of familial love and support.

As the day drew to a close, smiles adorned the faces of all who attended, with hearts warmed by the shared experiences and cherished moments of connection. With each passing month, Rutherglen Care Home reaffirms its commitment to fostering community spirit and enriching the lives of its residents through initiatives like the First Tuesday Club.
