Rutherglen Jubilee Garden Scoops Horticulture Prize

Patriotic gardeners at Rutherglen beat 35 other Care Homes to win the ‘Best Jubilee Garden’ prize in a national competition this year.

Team Rutherglen wowed judges with their efforts, dedicated to July’s 75^th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II‘s reign.

Judges at the ‘Advinia In Bloom 2022’ awards loved the stunning floral display they created for the platinum jubilee.

They were also impressed that the Resident gardeners incorporated an ‘Alice In Wonderland’ element into the display, making it really pop.

When Resident Morag, 83, discovered the Rutherglen Jubilee Garden was crowned the winner, she burst into tears of joy.

Morag said: “It’s amazing news, and I’m just so happy that we won”

According to Activities Co-ordinator Maureen Thomson, Morag’s fellow Residents were also thrilled at the news of their win.

Maureen said: “We didn’t expect to win, but when we found out, it made all the hard work worthwhile!

“We recycled old tins from the kitchen and painted and potted them with bright flowers, and we designed and coloured bunting and decorations. We also painted some old teapots to use for our Mad Hatters Tea Party.

“It took weeks of hard work spent planting and preparing the gardens, and we even managed to get a croquet set and had great fun playing on the lawn.”
