Spring Renewal and Self-Care: A Week of Pampering at Bedford Care Home
14 April 2025

Bedford Care Home embraced the arrival of spring with a week dedicated to self-care, focusing on relaxation, renewal, and the joy of a little pampering. As winter finally loosened its grip and summer began to peek through, residents were treated to a variety of activities designed to refresh both body and spirit.

For Maureen, the week was especially meaningful. Recently, she had rediscovered old photographs of herself sporting a sleek, short brunette hairstyle and expressed how much she missed that look. With the help of fundraising efforts, Maureen was treated to a makeover, where her hair was cut, dyed, and styled to match the style she once loved. Every morning, she takes pride in styling it with hair clips she’s made in arts and crafts sessions, as well as some special gifts from Bedford. The joy in her eyes and the confidence in her step were a beautiful reminder of the vibrant woman she’s always been.

Self-care week at Bedford was not just about new hairstyles; it also offered full-body refreshment. Residents enjoyed one-on-one pampering sessions, from soothing foot and leg massages to hand treatments, eyebrow tidy-ups, and shaves. Nail painting was a particular highlight, with residents choosing their favourite colours and helping each other apply polish, with pink being the clear favourite. Even Fred, ever the trendsetter, chose a striking metallic blue for his pinky, which sparked laughter and compliments throughout the home.

These special days offered much more than beauty treatments—they allowed residents to make choices, connect with others, and enjoy sensory experiences that brought moments of joy, especially for those living with dementia. It was a week that reminded everyone of the importance of self-care, social connection, and taking time to rejuvenate.
