VE Day Celebrations at Burrswood House: A Month of Remembrance and Joy

27 May 2025

This month at Burrswood House, the home has been filled with the spirit of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration as we marked VE Day in full swing. Our team worked together to transform the home with vibrant decorations, bunting, and wartime posters that brought a sense of nostalgia and warmth. Many residents were thrilled to see familiar images and slogans that stirred memories from their younger years.

“It feels like stepping back in time. I remember seeing posters like this as a young girl during the war,” one resident shared with a smile.

Throughout the week, the home was alive with conversation, as residents took this opportunity to reflect and share personal stories from the wartime era. It was a poignant and heartwarming experience for both staff and visitors to listen to their accounts of resilience, community, and hope.

“It was a real honour to hear their stories – it reminded us why we do what we do,” a staff member reflected.

The highlight of our celebration was a delightful afternoon gathering where residents, their families, and staff enjoyed classic wartime songs performed live, with plenty of singing along and even a few dances. Laughter filled the room, and it was truly moving to see so many generations come together in such a meaningful way.

Following the entertainment, everyone was treated to a buffet carefully curated with input from our residents. From Victoria sponge to jam tarts and trifles, every dessert held a story.

“We used to have sponge cake just like this during the street parties,” one resident recalled.

It was a beautiful day of connection, reflection, and joy – and a celebration that will be remembered fondly by all.
